People ask us which is the cheapest tiger safari in India as though there were a league table with one reserve at the bottom. There is not, and anyone who hands you one is simplifying something that depends almost entirely on how you book.

Two families can visit the same forest in the same week and pay very different amounts. Not because one got a discount, but because of six decisions made before either of them arrived.

Here is what those six are, and — since you are reading this on a resort's website — an honest account of where we sit on each.

Short version: the biggest single factor is whether the safari is charged per person or per vehicle. After that it is who you book through, which day of the week you travel, and how far your bed is from the gate.

1. Per person, or per jeep

This is the one that moves the total more than everything else put together, and it is the one almost nobody checks before booking.

At some reserves the safari permit is charged for every passenger. Add a person and the cost goes up again. A family of five pays considerably more than a couple, for exactly the same drive, in exactly the same vehicle.

At others, Dudhwa included, the drive is quoted as one jeep. Two of you or a full vehicle, the safari is the same. Your cost per head falls with every person who gets in.

Before you compare two reserves on price at all, find out which model each uses. A number that looks low per person can be the higher total once your group is in the car, and a number that looks high for a vehicle can be the cheaper one.

2. The foreign-passenger rule

This one catches people badly, and it is worth knowing wherever you book.

At some reserves, if any passenger in the vehicle is a foreign national, the foreign rate applies to everyone in it. The Corbett Tiger Reserve portal states this in plain words on its own pricing page.

For an NRI family visiting relatives in India — one of the commonest kinds of group we see in winter — that can change a jeep's cost dramatically. One cousin with a foreign passport, and the whole vehicle is repriced.

Ask the question before you book anywhere. If your group mixes passports, tell us when you write and we will set out exactly how it applies to your booking rather than leaving you to find out at the gate.

3. Who you book through

A travel site earns a commission on every reservation it takes, and that commission is inside the price you are shown. It is not added at checkout; it is already there.

Booking the resort directly removes it. There is a second, less obvious saving too: when one team arranges the room, the permit and the jeep together, there is one margin in the chain instead of three.

This is why the rate we quote directly comes in below the rate the same room carries on a booking platform. Not a promotion, not a sale — just one fewer party taking a cut.

4. Which day you go

Room rates rise for weekends, long weekends and the Christmas to New Year week. Everywhere. If your dates can move by a day or two, a midweek trip is the easiest saving on this entire list, and it costs you nothing to take.

It buys something else as well. Fewer vehicles on the track means a sighting is yours rather than something watched over four other jeeps.

5. How far your room is from the gate

A hotel an hour from the forest is not just an earlier alarm. At some reserves the transfer to and from the gate, twice a day, is a line on your bill. Where it is not charged, it is paid in time and in a cold drive in the dark.

Our resort is a two to three minute drive from the Kishanpur Zone gate. The transfer cost disappears, and so does the four o'clock start.

6. What is actually included

The cheapest-looking quote is often the one with the most missing from it. When you compare two, check each of these against both:

  • Meals. Room-only looks cheaper until three days of food is added at a forest edge with few options.
  • Guide and vehicle. Sometimes inside the permit, sometimes a separate charge.
  • Entry fees. Occasionally quoted apart from the safari.
  • Camera charges. Levied at some zones and not others.
  • Taxes. Check whether the number you were shown includes them.
  • Transfers. Airport pickup, and the daily run to the gate.

Ask for a line-by-line break-up from anyone you are considering. A quote that will not break down is usually hiding an addition, and the ones that will are easy to compare honestly.

Two false economies

Both of these look like savings and are not.

One night instead of two. A single night buys one morning drive. One drive is a lottery; two is a reasonable chance. Saving a night and seeing nothing is the most expensive outcome available, because the whole journey was for the forest.

A cheaper room far from the gate. The money saved on the room goes back out on transfers, and what you actually spend is an hour of your morning, twice, in the dark, in winter.

Where Dudhwa lands

Running our own reserve through the same six points, plainly:

  • Per jeep, not per headThe safari is quoted as one vehicle. Your cost per person falls as your group grows, instead of rising.
  • Mixed groupsTell us the passports in your party and we will set out exactly how the rate applies before you commit. No surprise at the gate.
  • DirectYou deal with the resort. No platform commission sits inside your rate.
  • MidweekWeekday rates are lower than weekend. We will tell you which of your possible dates is cheaper, even when it is not the one you asked about.
  • Three minutes from the gateNo transfer charge, no pre-dawn commute.
  • One break-upRoom, meals, permit, jeep and guide quoted together, line by line, before you pay anything.

We have not put rates in this article, and that is deliberate. Your actual number depends on your dates, how many of you there are and which zones you want, and a figure printed here would be wrong for most people who read it.

Send us the dates and the headcount. You will get the full break-up, with nothing waiting at the gate.

Book direct, pay less

One jeep, one fare

The safari is quoted as a vehicle, not per seat. Group size does not change the drive.

No platform commission

Direct booking pays no agent cut, so your rate lands below the one listed anywhere else.

Weekdays cost less

We will tell you which of your possible dates works out cheaper, even if it is not the one you asked about.

Full break-up

Room, meals, permit, jeep and guide, line by line, before you pay anything.

Send your dates and headcount and we will come back with the current rate and a full break-up — nothing hidden.

Common questions

Which is the cheapest tiger safari in India?

There is no single cheapest reserve, because the same forest can cost very different amounts depending on how the permit is charged, who you book through, whether you travel midweek, and how far your room is from the gate. The reserves that work out lower are usually the ones that charge the safari as a vehicle rather than per seat, and where you can book the resort directly instead of through an agent.

Is a safari charged per person or per jeep?

It depends on the reserve. Some charge a permit for every passenger, so the cost climbs with each person you add. Others, Dudhwa included, are quoted as one vehicle for the whole group. For a family or a group of friends this single difference changes the total more than anything else on the bill.

Why do foreign visitors sometimes make a whole jeep more expensive?

At some reserves the rule is that if any passenger is a foreign national, the foreign rate applies to everybody in the vehicle. The Corbett Tiger Reserve portal states this plainly. It catches mixed groups, particularly NRI families travelling with relatives in India, so it is worth asking before you book anywhere.

Does booking directly with a resort cost less than a travel site?

Usually, yes. A booking platform earns a commission on every reservation, and that commission is built into the price you see. Booking directly removes it. It also means one team arranges the room, the permit and the jeep together rather than three separate margins.

Is a midweek safari cheaper than a weekend one?

Almost everywhere, yes. Room rates rise for weekends, long weekends and the Christmas to New Year week. If your dates are flexible by a day or two, shifting a trip to midweek is the single easiest saving available, and it usually means a quieter forest as well.

Does staying near the gate save money?

It saves the transfer to and from the gate before dawn and after each drive, which at some reserves is a separate charge and at all of them is time. A room a few minutes from the gate removes that cost and the early alarm with it.
