Dudhwa is one of the few places in India where you can look for a tiger in the morning and a one-horned rhino in the afternoon. But each animal has its own zone. Booking the right zone is the difference between a good safari and a long drive. Here is where to look for what.

Remember: sightings are never guaranteed in any forest. The right zone, season and a good guide raise your chances.

Tigers: Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary

Kishanpur is the zone of Dudhwa best known for tiger sightings. Its open grasslands give better visibility, and Beldanda, the Ring Road and Jhadi Tal are well known for tiger, leopard, swamp deer and birdlife. Dudhwa Tiger Reserve's tiger count has risen to 135, as reported by the UP forest department.

The Kishanpur gate is 2-3 minutes from DTR Jungle Hideaways. With a 2-night stay you can usually do three to four safaris here, morning and evening.

One-horned rhinos: the Rhino Area, Dudhwa Zone 1

Rhinos were brought back to Dudhwa decades ago and now live in a protected Rhino Area in the Sonaripur and Sathiana ranges of Dudhwa Zone 1, about 35-40 minutes' drive from our resort.

  • Morning: rides on elephant back
  • Afternoon: rides by vehicle
  • The Rhino Area ride is an extra fee and works on a first-come-first-served basis, so reach early.

Swamp deer (barasingha): Jhadi Tal

The wetlands and grasslands around Jhadi Tal in Kishanpur are the best-known place to see swamp deer, the barasingha. Herds graze in the open, often with birds around the water.

Elephants: Dudhwa Zone 1

Dudhwa Zone 1 has denser sal forest and wild elephant herds. Combine it with your Rhino Area ride for a half-day in this zone.

Dolphins and gharials: Katarniaghat

Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, about 2-2.5 hours away by road, is known for the Gerwa River, Gangetic dolphins and gharials. It is best done as a full-day trip; we plan the timing so you do not miss your slot.

Birds: everywhere, best in winter

UP Ecotourism lists about 450 bird species for the reserve. November to February is the best time for birders, when Jhadi Tal and the wetlands fill with winter migrants. Even the resort garden is good for a morning bird walk that needs no safari booking.

A simple 2-night plan

  1. Day 1 afternoon: Kishanpur safari for tigers and Jhadi Tal.
  2. Day 2 morning: Kishanpur again, the best tiger shift.
  3. Day 2 afternoon: Rhino Area by vehicle in Dudhwa Zone 1.
  4. Day 3 morning: one last Kishanpur safari before checkout.
